Beckham booked in Real defeat
David Beckham started his first home league match since the opening weekend of the season — and only his fifth La Liga match this term — but could not prevent an embarrassing 3-0 home defeat for Real Madrid by mid-table Recreativo last night.
The statistics make depressing reading for the former England captain. He has started only one match all season that Real have gone on to win. Real have lost only four matches this campaign and Beckham has started three of them.
The 31-year-old midfield player will be free to talk to other clubs about a move in ten days’ time but as “shop window” performances go, this was not what he would have wanted. He saw little of the ball in a dire first half for the home team and struggled to make an impact. His frustration showed when, after 25 minutes, he was booked for pulling back Ikechukwu Uche.
After 32 minutes, Florent Sinama Pongolle, on loan from Liverpool, shrugged off Fabio Cannavaro’s challenge to shoot the visiting team into the lead.
Eight minutes into the second half, Uche left Cannavaro in his wake to score Recreativo’s second and Emilio Viqueira added a third from a free kick in the dying moments.
