Beckham urged to play safe by LA Galaxy

David Beckham has been urged by LA Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop not to rush back from injury, until he is 100 per cent fit.

The 32-year-old former England captain has seen less than 15 minutes' action for his new club, since arriving in Los Angeles on July 12 with ankle ligament damage. Galaxy have played three games since Beckham's arrival, but his only appearance came as a 78th-minute substitute in last weekend's friendly against Chelsea.

Beckham took no part in Galaxy's SuperLiga victory over Mexican champions CF Pachuca yesterday morning, instead watching the match from an executive box at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Yallop decided on Monday to take a cautious approach with Beckham, but said watching the spirited 2-1 win, courtesy of goals from striker Alan Gordon and captain Landon Donovan, had left the former Real Madrid player itching to get back on the pitch.

"We want to make sure he's going to be committed and 100 per cent before he actually plays. If he had come in and said 'I want to play' then we'd have worked with it. But it was good that we could get through this match," Yallop said.

"I think he was looking [at the Pachuca game] and saying 'this will suit me'. It was an open game and a game in which he can move around the pitch and really do his stuff. I think he's excited now."

LA Galaxy face Mexican side Chivas Guadalajara at the 92,000-capacity Los Angeles Coliseum this weekend. After an opening win in the group stages of the eight-team American-Mexican tournament, and with Chivas drawing with FC Dallas this morning, Galaxy are in the driving seat heading into the game.

Yallop is philosophical about Beckham's chances of a return this weekend. "He's still injured. The more we can get him ready to play the full 90 minutes, the better we are. He's a little bit ahead of where he was a couple of days ago, but why risk it?

"It's going to be great atmosphere and I'm sure he'll want to get some sort of time, but we'll see."
