Beckham dismisses retirement talk

David Beckham says he has no plans to retire from international football despite England's failure to reach Euro 2008 after losing to Croatia.

Beckham came on as a second-half substitute in the 3-2 home defeat by Croatia to win his 99th cap.

"Without a doubt. I'm not retiring," said former England captain Beckham.

"I said that the moment I was taken out of the team and the moment I came back into the team and I'm not stepping down," said the 32-year-old.

Scott Carson's awful attempt to stop Niko Kranjcar's shot gifted Croatia an early lead and Slaven Bilic's side went in at the break 2-0 up after Ivica Olic capitalised on some ponderous defending.

Frank Lampard's penalty and Peter Crouch's superb volley hauled England level, but Mladen Petric's shot gave Croatia a memorable win.

"We're disappointed as a team and obviously the nation will be disappointed about not qualifying," said Beckham.

"If you don't win games you don't qualify. We just didn't perform and that's the end of it."

England captain Steve Gerrard pinpointed Croatia's two early first-half goals as key to their inability to secure the necessary point against Croatia.

"The first 15 minutes killed us - we wanted to start quickly but we find ourselves with a mountain to climb," said the Liverpool midfielder.

"There was a big improvement in the second half and we should've shut up shop but we've let it slip."

Goalscorer Crouch insisted Carson would recover following his embarrassing error.

"Scott's a fantastic young keeper," said Crouch. "He'll be disappointed but he's still a fantastic prospect.

why should he even retire man? is it always that people expect something major to happen to becks when england doesnt make it? (ref. to world cup'06 and becks stepped down as captain)

It's because he's 32 and not allowed to be loaned out to europe while the short MLS season is not in play. The next major tournament for him isn't until 2010, so naturally people question whether he'll be fit for the world cup in 2 and half more years.

What the hell's wrong with this guy?

When people look up to his name and hope for something big to happen... he blows his chances!!!

Still a Beckham fan, Hope to see England or Beckham winning something after this embarasing defeat!

Beckham played very well, you can't fault him for England's loss. The loss goes to the back line and the keeper. The exit goes to Mclaren.
