Beckham begins Arsenal training

David Beckham has begun training with Arsenal as he bids to win his 100th cap for England next month.

Beckham, 32, asked Gunners manager Arsene Wenger for permission to train with the club so that he can keep fit during the American close season.

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder, who still has a family home in Hertfordshire, is using the Gunners' complex at London Colney this month to keep up his fitness levels during the Major League Soccer close season.

The 32-year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar needs one more international appearance to reach a landmark 100 caps and hopes to be picked by new England boss Fabio Capello for his first friendly against Switzerland at Wembley on 6th February.

Arsene Wenger was delighted to finally see David Beckham in an Arsenal kit but sadly for Gunners fans the former England captain will not be staying long.

Beckham joined up with the Gunners on January 2, but is doing mostly individual fitness work.

However, the midfielder did work with the Arsenal first-team squad for a brief session today and sported a full Gunners training kit, labelled '23' which used to be allocated for his England team-mate Sol Campbell and was Beckham's number during a four-year stay in Spain.

Wenger is more than happy to help out the former Manchester United man, whom he has long admired and was often a regular visitor to Arsenal's Hertfordshire complex when on international duty.

However, the Gunners boss insists Beckham's visit will not be allowed to become "a circus".

"We are helping him to work on his fitness and trying to keep it as quiet as possible," Wenger said. "We don't want to make something complicated out of something that is very simple.

"He doesn't live far away and always loved Arsenal. That's why we help him."

The Arsenal boss added: "He's just come back from a long break and has had injuries. He will not be playing in any games and will not be registered. He is just training."

However, Wenger declared: "It will not become a circus. We are quite well equipped here to handle that here. We have mirror doors and everything that is needed."

The Arsenal manager also insisted there was nothing untoward with Beckham's attire.

"We give a kit to everyone who practices," Wenger maintained. "When a triallist comes from anywhere in the world we give him a kit."

Beckham is expected to return to LA Galaxy in mid-February in time for their pre-season friendlies ahead of the MLS season, which starts in late March.
