Beckham's mum unimpressed with Armani ad

David Beckham swapped jokes with new neighbour Jay Leno in an appearance on US TV programme The Tonight Show, and admitted his recent, revealing photoshoot for Emporio Armani didn't go down well with his mother.

Since moving to California to play for Major League Soccer team The LA Galaxy, Beckham has lived in the same Los Angeles neighbourhood as chat-show veteran Leno, the Tonight Show host.

In his appearance on the show the pair discussed the England midfielder's appearance in Emporio Armani adverts, wearing nothing but a pair of figure-hugging briefs and a come-hither look.

Beckham confessed to having been nervous during the photoshoot, as he knew his mother would see the shots of him very nearly in the nude.

"I was so nervous about doing that campaign because obviously I've done photo shoots before, but I've never done photo shoots in my underwear," he said.

"I was quite nervous because obviously I knew my wife and friends were going to see it. And my mum was going to see it. When the photos first came out, she was the first one to call me and say, 'What are you doing?'

"I had to try and explain it to her, and it didn't really go down that well", he said, to Leno and the audience's amusement.

The photos were more popular with the female members of the show's audience, however, who shrieked with approval at the black-and-white images. "Do you normally sit around the house like this?", Leno enquired.

Beckham used the opportunity of appearing on Tonight to apologise for the hordes of paparazzi who have stalked his and wife Victoria's every move since the move to the States.

He did say, however, that US celebrity photographers were much kinder to the couple than their British counterparts.
