US and FA both want David Beckham for world cup bids

David Beckham is being dragged into a World Cup bidding war between England and the United States.

The 33-year-old will captain England tonight in their friendly against Trinidad & Tobago. He now plays his club football for LA Galaxy and has been approached by the FA to spearhead a major push for England to host the 2018 finals. But the US Soccer Federation intend to use Beckham.'s status as one of the world's most recognised sportsmen as part of their rival campaign.

The American view is that Beckham in the US will guarantee votes for their Soccer Federation as they search the globe for backers. They intend to use Beckham.'s image and action replays as part of their promotional DVD which is currently being put together. And there's nothing Becks can do to stop it.

However, he will never be seen personally backing a rival bid to England's. An FA insider said: "Preliminary talks about David's involvement in our bid to stage the 2018 World Cup were opened several months ago. "He will play a pivotal role in England's bid. It is out of the question that he will either support or endorse a rival bid."

What's up with Donovan, Klein, McBride and Bocanegra etc? Bit of a cheek I think to use another country's players to promote your own!!
