Beckham: We know what's needed

David Beckham says that England’s players are well aware that they need to up their game significantly ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

England laboured to a 2-2 draw with Czech Republic on Wednesday evening, instilling little confidence ahead of the commencement of their 2010 World Cup quest, which kicks off against Andorra in Barcelona on September 6.

Of more concern however is the meeting with Croatia in Zagreb four days later, but Beckham is confident that if the Three Lions squad work hard enough they will be prepared.

“We all know there’s work to be done and as long as we work hard as a team and stay together as a unit, we’ll have a good chance,” Beckham said on Setanta Sports News.

“No one’s going to guarantee us qualification. If we work hard we’ve got the players.”

The former England captain dismissed any question that the choice of John Terry to lead Fabio Capello’s side had anything to do with the poor performance at Wembley.

“Whoever got picked to be captain deserved it,” said Beckham. “Rio’s (Ferdinand) had a great season, he’s been a great servant for Manchester United and England. John Terry had a great season last year and is also a big captain with experience.

“I think either one of those two could be captain, and not forgetting Steven Gerrard. There are great leaders and captains all the way through the team, so we’re lucky.

“We all congratulated JT, and Rio did, so at the end of the day we all stick together and we all believe in our captain.”
